Ironmills Park

The walk along Ironmills Park feels quieter than you'd expect for something this close to Musselburgh. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you'll actually spot things rather than just walk past manicured lawns. The woodland trails wind through mixed trees with occasional glimpses of the Esk estuary, and there's a real sense of the landscape doing its own thing here.

What makes it work is that it doesn't try too hard. There's no visitor centre, no café, no fee that I could find - you just turn up and walk. The paths are decent enough, well-maintained without feeling artificial. Historically it's tied to the iron mill works that ran here centuries back - hence the name - but honestly the industrial heritage is subtle. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit, though you can easily knock out a half-hour walk if you're short on time.
