The beach at Iron Mill Bay isn't the kind of place you stumble upon by accident - you have to want to be there. East of Dunfermline, this nature reserve sits tucked away on Fife's coast, a proper quiet spot where you're more likely to hear oystercatchers than ice-cream vans.

It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction. The reserve protects important coastal habitat - dunes, grassland, rocky shore - and you'll see evidence of actual conservation work happening. There's no car park to speak of, no visitor centre, no tannoy announcements. You park near Dunfermline and walk in, which means most day-trippers never make it here.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from Iron Mill Bay. The varied terrain means you're not just trudging along a promenade - you've got dunes to navigate, rocks to scramble over, paths that change depending on the tide. Families with young kids might find it a bit scattered and unstructured compared to managed beaches, though older children who like exploring tend to prefer this kind of freedom.
