Irchester Country Park

You'll spot the ironstone workings almost immediately - those dramatic red cliffs cutting through woodland just outside Northampton tell you straightaway this isn't your typical country park. Irchester is built on the bones of old industry, which gives it proper character. The walking trails loop through restored quarry lakes and grassland, with paths that genuinely feel like they go somewhere rather than just circling a car park.

Walkers will find this most rewarding. The terrain isn't difficult, but it's varied enough to hold your attention for a good couple of hours, and the contrast between open water, scrubby heath, and wooded sections keeps things interesting. History enthusiasts will appreciate the ironstone heritage - this was serious extraction country back in the day, and you can still read the landscape like a book. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited after an hour or so; there's no playground infrastructure to speak of, just genuine outdoors.

It's free to visit and open year-round. Spring is lovely for wildflowers around the grassland margins. If you're staying at nearby Grendon Lakes or Sywell Country Park, both excellent bases for the area, Irchester makes a natural half-day outing that doesn't require booking ahead or planning too much. The lakes attract birdwatchers too, so binoculars worth bringing. Parking is straightforward, and you're never far from Northampton if the weather turns.
