Ipsley Alders Marsh Nature Reserve

The marsh sprawls across the landscape near Alcester with the sort of quiet authority that makes you forget you're in the West Midlands at all. Ipsley Alders is proper wetland - reed beds, open water, the works - and it's the kind of place where you actually see things if you go early and move slowly.

This reserve pulls in birdwatchers most obviously. The water attracts wildfowl year-round, and winter brings in visiting species that make twitchers forget their thermos flasks entirely. But it's not exclusively for binoculars and field guides. Walkers find decent paths through the reserve, and there's something restorative about standing at the water's edge watching the reeds move. Families with older kids do well here; younger ones might get restless after an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting things.

Access and facilities aren't lavishly marked up anywhere, so best to check locally before you go - Alcester's close enough to ask around. The reserve works brilliantly alongside a stay at Island Meadow just six miles away, where you can base yourself properly and make a few mornings of it. Wootton Park Glamping Pods is another option nearby if you want something different.

Timing matters. Spring and autumn migrations make this place hum with activity. Summer can feel a bit thin if the water levels drop. Go when the light's good and the birds are moving, and you'll understand why locals keep coming back.
