The ICA sits tucked away on The Mall, a deliberately unmarked doorway that feels more like a secret than a public gallery. You'll walk past it if you're not paying attention - which is rather the point. Inside, it's all white walls, raw concrete, and that particular hush that comes with spaces designed to make you think.

This is contemporary art, done properly. No blockbuster crowds, no gift shop nonsense. You get exhibitions that shift every few months, a cinema showing films you won't find in multiplexes, and a bookshop where every title feels handpicked. The whole thing feels like it's for people who actually care about art, not just Instagram backdrops.

The cinema programme is genuinely the draw for many - experimental stuff, retrospectives, international work that's hard to see elsewhere. The galleries themselves demand time. This isn't a quick thirty-minute visit. Give yourself at least two hours if you're serious about it.

Admission's free for the galleries, though special exhibitions sometimes charge. The café is decent for a sit-down between rooms. It works well as part of a London trip - you're right in the West End, so you can slot it between the National Gallery and lunch in Soho.

If you're staying at Lovat Parks just outside the city, the ICA makes a proper cultural counterweight to a park holiday - something to do on the day you fancy heading into town. It's not for everyone, mind. Kids will be bored stiff. But if you actually engage with contemporary work, it's worth the journey.
