Ingsdons Hill

The walk up Ingsdons Hill takes about twenty minutes from Castle Cary, and it's a proper little lung-buster if you're not used to the gradient. Once you're up there, though, the Somerset countryside spreads out below you in all directions - farmland, copses, the occasional distant church tower. Nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant on a clear day.

This is walker territory, mainly. The hill itself isn't high enough to need scrambling kit or special gear, just decent shoes and the willingness to push uphill. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog, though teenagers would probably manage without complaint. It's the sort of spot you'd do as part of a bigger day out rather than a destination in itself - perfect if you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby and want to burn off some energy.

The views don't change much depending on when you go, though autumn light is prettier than summer haze. An hour's outing, start to finish. Free, obviously, since it's a hill.

If you're based at Glamping on the Hill or Cathedral View Glamping - both just under six miles away - this would slot nicely into a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Castle Cary itself is worth a proper poke around, medieval and still functioning as an actual working town rather than a heritage film set. Ingsdons Hill works best as the kind of easy leg-stretcher that reminds you why you booked a Somerset holiday in the first place.
