Inchgower Distillery

The whisky comes first at Inchgower, a working distillery just outside Buckie that's been turning barley into something rather special since the 1820s. You'll walk through the production process - from the malting floors to the copper stills gleaming under industrial lights - and the smell alone is worth the trip. The whole operation feels genuinely working, not a polished theme park version of distilling.

It's the kind of place where whisky enthusiasts will lose hours, but casual visitors might find themselves done in 90 minutes. The tour explains what's happening without getting too technical, though you won't leave understanding every detail of fermentation. The tasting at the end matters more than the classroom bits - that's where it clicks.

Come mid-week if you can. Weekends draw tour groups, and the narrow warehouse spaces get cramped. Spring and early autumn offer the best light for photographs of those copper stills.
