About Inchcolm Seals
It's worth a visit if you're already making the boat trip out - and most people are, given the seals are the real attraction here. Kids will spend maybe thirty to forty-five minutes looking round before wanting to get back outside to spot the actual animals. The exhibits feel a bit sparse and dated if I'm honest, but the setting itself makes up for it. You're standing on an island with medieval stonework crumbling around you while seals bark in the background - that's the real experience.
The gallery is free to access once you've paid for your ferry ticket from South Queensferry. Allow a couple of hours for the whole island trip including the boat journey. Spring and summer are best for seeing active seals.
If you're basing yourself near Dunfermline, Green Oak Nature Retreat and Linwater Caravan Park are both close enough for exploring this corner of Fife. Combine it with a walk round the island itself and you've got a proper half-day outing. The boat ride alone is worth the trip even if you skip the gallery.
