Ilfracombe beach rocks

The rocks at Ilfracombe beach are the real draw here - dramatic red sandstone formations that jut out of the sand like something from a geology textbook. Low tide reveals pools teeming with starfish, anemones, and small crabs if you're willing to crouch down and look properly. It's proper rock-pooling territory.

You can walk right out at low tide and explore the formations up close. The cliffs behind the beach add to the drama, and on a clear day the light catches the stone in ways that make phone cameras work overtime. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how keen you are on marine life.

Families with young kids will get the most from this during low tide - there's something about finding a starfish that keeps children entertained longer than you'd expect. Walkers might take it as part of a longer coastal route rather than a standalone visit. It's worth timing your trip around the tides though, or you'll just see a submerged beach.

Ilfracombe itself is close by, so this fits neatly into a seaside break. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Hele Valley is practically on your doorstep at less than a mile away - the beach rocks are an easy morning or afternoon jaunt. Watermouth Valley and Sandaway Beach are within a few miles too, making this a natural add-on to a North Devon camping trip. Not a destination in itself, but exactly what a beach day needs when you've tired of lounging on sand.
