Icehouse Wood

A proper woodland walk through ancient Essex forest, Icehouse Wood sits just outside Ingatestone and offers the kind of peaceful green space that feels genuinely removed from the commuter belt. The trees here are substantial - old oaks and chestnuts that have been around longer than most of us - and the paths wind through dense cover that keeps things cool even on warm days.

What you're doing is straightforward: walking. There are no attractions, no visitor centre, no café. Just forest floor, birdsong, and the occasional squirrel. The paths are reasonably maintained though can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are sensible. Most people spend between 45 minutes and two hours here depending on which route you take and how often you stop to admire things.

This works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're camped at Barleylands or Stuarts Wood - both within six miles - and it's the sort of place that works better for adults and older children than toddlers. Young kids will get bored without a clear destination or play area. If you're into wildlife spotting or just need some forest air between park activities, it's worth the short drive from Ingatestone.

There's no admission charge and no opening hours to worry about, which means you can time it to avoid crowds. Early morning is genuinely lovely. Bring water though - there's nothing there, and on a warm day you'll want it.
