Ice House Spinney

A proper woodland walk just outside Lutterworth, Ice House Spinney is one of those places that rewards you for knowing it exists at all. The spinney - that's a small wood to anyone not raised on rural British English - sits quietly off the beaten track, offering dense tree cover and the kind of peaceful walking you can't manufacture.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland paths threading through mature trees, the occasional clearing, and the sound of actual birdsong rather than traffic. There's history lurking beneath the surface too - the name comes from an 18th-century ice house on the site, though you won't see much evidence of it now. The trees have reclaimed whatever remained.

This works best for people who actually like walking, not just the idea of it. Families with restless toddlers will find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. Serious walkers and nature types though? You could easily spend an hour or two here, especially if you're into spotting woodland birds and identifying trees. There's something meditative about it.

Timing-wise, go in spring or early summer when the undergrowth isn't completely wet and the light filters properly through the canopy.
