Hylands Park

Hylands Park is a sprawling expanse of woodland and open grassland just outside Ingatestone, the sort of place where you can actually breathe properly. The estate spans nearly 350 acres and feels genuinely wild in parts - proper Essex countryside with trees that have been here longer than most of the county.

Walking the perimeter takes a good two hours if you're not rushing, though you can duck in for a quick thirty-minute circuit if time's tight. The main draw is the woodland itself: old oaks and beeches create proper shade on warm days, and there's enough open parkland that kids won't feel hemmed in. The trails are reasonably well-maintained, though they get muddy after rain - bring appropriate footwear.

It's the sort of place that appeals more to serious walkers and nature types than to families wanting facilities and play areas. If you're after somewhere to stretch your legs and see what Essex actually looked like before the motorways, it delivers. The bird life is decent too, especially in autumn and spring migration periods.

Struats Wood Campsite sits just four-and-a-half miles away, making this a solid add-on to a week in the area. Admission appears free, though facilities are minimal - there's no visitor centre or café, so bring your own supplies. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter and give the best light through the trees.
