Hylands House

The drive out to Hylands House from Ingatestone takes you through proper Essex countryside, and when you round the bend past the gates, you're suddenly faced with this rather grand early 19th-century villa that catches the afternoon light beautifully. It's a striking Regency pile - all elegant proportions and that pale coloured brick they favoured back then - sitting in genuinely impressive grounds that sprawl across acres.

Inside, the rooms tell you quite a bit about how the Essex gentry lived when money was no object. The interiors have been restored with some care, and you get a proper sense of domestic life from another era rather than just trudging past velvet ropes. The library and drawing rooms warrant a proper look-round, though I'd say you're looking at a solid hour here rather than a full morning.

It works well enough if you're based at Stuarts Wood Campsite nearby - close enough for an afternoon jaunt without eating into serious exploring time. The grounds are the real draw, particularly if the weather's decent. You can wander the gardens and soak up the views across the Essex landscape without feeling rushed.
