Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

The fairground materialises in Hyde Park each November, transforming the open grassland into a sprawl of ice rinks, wooden chalets and carnival rides that feels more European than London. There's a proper Christmas market vibe here - mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, wooden stalls selling the usual festive tat alongside some decent jewellery and crafts if you dig past the dross.

The ice rink is the main draw and it's genuinely good fun, though queues can be daft on weekends. The rides are what you'd expect from a travelling fairground - Ferris wheel, log flume, various spinning contraptions that'll make your stomach protest. Families with younger kids usually get a solid afternoon out of it; teenagers might find it a touch twee unless they're keen on the funfair aesthetic.

Allowing three to four hours is realistic if you want to skate, grab food and have a mooch round the market without feeling rushed. It'll cost you - entry is free but you pay per attraction, and prices stack up quickly. Go on a weekday morning if possible; evenings and weekends turn into a proper scrum.

If you're basing yourself at Lovat Parks just over a mile away, this is an easy evening trip rather than a full day out. The location can't be beaten for access to central London, though the park itself feels temporary and slightly artificial compared to the real magic of Hyde Park in summer. Still, it does Christmas properly.
