A flat stretch of grassland just outside Market Harborough that's been left to do what it does best - provide habitat for ground-nesting birds and wildflowers that most of us have stopped noticing. The reserve isn't dramatic. It won't stop you mid-walk and demand a photograph. But that's rather the point.

You get a proper sense of what English countryside actually looked like before we fenced everything off and sprayed it with chemicals. In spring and early summer, lapwings wheel overhead and curlews call across the fields. Winter brings visiting birds worth tracking with binoculars. The paths are straightforward and generally dry underfoot, though it can get muddy after rain.

This is for anyone who gets genuinely excited by spotting a lesser spotted woodpecker or watching a kestrel hover. Keen walkers often pass through as part of a longer route into Market Harborough itself. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment after twenty minutes - there's not much to do except walk and look. But if your children are the sort who'd rather be outside than anywhere else, they'll be fine.

It's the kind of place you'd visit if you were staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Brook Meadow or Rosemarie - adding it to a weekend that includes proper market town wandering rather than visiting it as a standalone trip. Free access, no facilities to speak of. Allow an hour, maybe longer if you're serious about the birds.
