Hurcott Pool

Three hundred acres of water stretch out where coal mining once shaped the Worcestershire landscape. Hurcott Pool, just outside Kidderminster, is what remains when industry gives way to nature - a proper fishing lake that's become something of a local secret.

Anglers will find this the main draw, with decent pike and carp fishing once you've sorted permission from the local angling club. The water's deep enough in places to keep things interesting, though don't expect manicured banks or fancy facilities. This is fishing as it should be - you versus the water.

Families might find it less compelling unless the kids are genuinely keen on wildlife spotting. The birdwatching can be rewarding, particularly for waterfowl, but there's no playground or café to fall back on when attention wanes.

Walkers can circuit the pool, though the paths aren't always well-maintained and can get properly muddy after rain. Still, it's a decent leg-stretch if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Wolverley Camping and Caravanning Club or Lincomb Lock Caravan Park.

Access seems to be free for walking, though fishing rights are another matter entirely. Best to ask locally about permissions before casting a line. Allow a couple of hours for a gentle wander, longer if you're serious about the fishing.
