Hungryhill Wood

The name alone makes you smile - Hungryhill Wood. It's a proper forest walk just outside Stirling, the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss, tucked into the Perthshire landscape where the trees are tall enough that you forget the road's anywhere nearby.

What you're getting here is a straightforward woodland ramble through mixed forest with decent paths underfoot. Nothing dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoints that'll knock your socks off - but the trees themselves are reason enough. There's something calming about old woodland where you can actually walk without scrambling over roots every two seconds. The paths loop through and connect up, so you can do anywhere from a gentle twenty-minute potter to a proper hour's hike depending on mood and energy.

Families with younger kids will do fine here - it's not challenging enough to grind anyone down, but woodland is woodland and children tend to find that endlessly entertaining. If you're walking with decent legs and time, push further in and you'll lose the weekend crowds pretty quickly.

Go early in the day or midweek if you value peace. Autumn's properly stunning - the light through the trees is something else. Free to access, no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need.

If you're basing yourself at Craighead Howf just up the road, this is an easy morning walk before breakfast or after lunch. Nothing life-changing, but a solid hour in the forest beats sitting on a caravan site.
