Hun Pool

Hun Pool sits just east of Hunstanton, a proper Norfolk water that draws walkers and bird-spotters in equal measure. It's a freshwater lake - nothing grandiose, but on a clear day the reflections are decent and you'll spot everything from mallards to the occasional heron if you're patient enough.

The walk around it takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace. Flat terrain, which means families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's not much in the way of facilities once you're out there. Bring a packed lunch if you're planning a proper morning. Serious birdwatchers should time it for dawn or dusk when the wildlife is most active.

It works well as a break from a park holiday - Wild Luxury and Parkdean Resorts Manor Park are both within spitting distance, as is Searles Leisure Resort. If you're staying at any of those, Hun Pool is the sort of spot you'd pop to for an hour's walk rather than drive halfway across Norfolk for specifically. The appeal is local and understated rather than showy.

Water quality varies by season, so I'd skip it after heavy rain when it gets a bit murky. Spring and early autumn are your best bets. Free to visit, naturally. There's limited parking near the entrance, so go early if you're visiting during school holidays.
