Humbly Grove Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Humbly Grove Copse sits just outside Alton and feels like the sort of place locals know about but tourists miss entirely. You're looking at mixed deciduous woodland - the kind where the canopy gets genuinely thick in summer and the ground's soft with years of leaf matter underfoot.

It's best for anyone who wants a proper ramble without the crowds you get at bigger forest parks. Walkers will find it satisfying; families with young kids might find it a bit sparse on the drama - there are no obvious playgrounds or visitor facilities, just trees and paths. History buffs should note the working landscape around it tells you plenty about Hampshire's rural past, though there's no interpretation board holding your hand through it.

You can walk here freely as far as I can tell - it's not fenced off or gated. Allow an hour for a decent circuit without rushing. Spring's lovely when the bluebells are out; autumn's proper golden if you catch it right. Winter's bit muddy underfoot.

If you're staying at Wigwam Holidays or Feather Down Manor Farm nearby, this makes a cracking morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's close enough to reach in ten minutes but far enough that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere. Don't expect facilities - bring water, decent shoes, and accept you might get a bit grubby.
