Walking into Hullockpithill Plantation east of Baldock feels like stepping into proper woodland - the kind with actual trees rather than the manicured park variety. It's a forestry plantation, so don't expect wilderness; the conifers are planted in neat rows, which some find calming and others find a bit regimented. The paths wind through softly, and you'll get decent shade whatever the season.

This works best for people who actually like forests - walkers after a quiet hour or so away from the car, not families expecting a theme park experience.
