Housesteads Roman Fort - Vercovicium - English Heritage Site

The walk up to Housesteads is steep and unforgiving, but the moment you crest the ridge and see those Roman stones laid out across the Northumberland moorland, it hits you why they chose this spot. This is Vercovicium - a proper fort from around 122 AD, positioned along Hadrian's Wall with views that stretch for miles. You're walking through the actual remains of a garrison that once housed 800 soldiers, their barracks and headquarters still marked out in stone.

What you get is the plan of the fort itself - foundations telling the story of Roman life on the frontier. The latrines are oddly compelling (communal, unsurprising), and the headquarters building gives you a sense of the hierarchy and order that made Rome tick. It's not a dramatic ruin in the way Mediterranean sites are, but that's partly the appeal. The landscape does the heavy lifting here.

This works best for history types and serious walkers - you need decent shoes and genuine interest to make the climb worthwhile. Families with younger kids might find it hard going, though older ones interested in Romans will get something real from it. Allow two to three hours including the walk from the car park. English Heritage runs it, so there's likely a small admission charge.

Hexham sits about 10 miles south and makes a sensible base. The nearby campsites - Hadrian's Wall Campsite and Stonehaugh especially - put you within striking distance of the wall's best sections, and Herding Hill Farm offers glamping if you want less roughing it. The fort doesn't stand alone; it's part of walking the wall itself, which is the real draw.
