Houghton House Plantation

The plantation sprawls across decent woodland just outside Carlisle, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient trees tower above, creating that proper cathedral-like atmosphere you get in old forests - shafts of light filtering through, the smell of damp earth and leaf litter. Walking the paths here feels genuinely peaceful, a genuine escape from the town rather than a manicured country estate experience.

It's walkers who'll get the most from Houghton House. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the ground can be boggy in places, and the paths aren't always obvious. You're looking at a solid hour or two to explore without rushing, depending on how many side trails you fancy investigating. Families with young children might find it a bit exposed underfoot, but older kids who don't mind muddy shoes will enjoy the scramble through the undergrowth.

There's something authentically underdeveloped about it that makes it feel less like a tourist tick-box and more like discovering somewhere locals have known about forever. No tea shops, no information boards explaining every tree species - just woodland that gets on with being woodland.

Stay at High Gaitle or Low Moor Head caravan parks nearby and you've got a solid base for combining this with other walking around Carlisle. The plantation fits nicely into a morning's ramble before heading into town proper.
