Hough Windmill

You'll spot Hough Windmill from the road well before you reach it - a proper red-brick Victorian structure that's been standing guard over the Leicestershire countryside for well over a century. It's one of those landmarks that stops you mid-drive and makes you think, "Right, I'm pulling over for a closer look."

This is a working windmill, though access to inside is sporadic at best - it's worth ringing ahead or checking locally in Derby, the nearest town, before you trek out specifically. When it does open, you get a genuine sense of how these mills actually functioned, with the machinery still largely intact. The real appeal, though, is the exterior. The brick is beautiful, the height is impressive, and the setting feels genuinely rural despite being relatively accessible from the East Midlands.

It's brilliant for a quick detour if you're basing yourself at New Forest View Caravan Site or Fire & Stars Woodland Camping just down the road - both within easy driving distance. Give it thirty minutes to an hour if you're stopping to photograph it and have a proper look around. Families won't find masses to do here unless kids are into industrial heritage, but history enthusiasts and anyone with a camera will find it worth the visit.

The windmill rewards a slower approach - walk around it, observe the craftsmanship, imagine the grain dust and noise when it was in full swing. It's the kind of place that reminds you why the Midlands countryside is worth exploring beyond the usual tourist trails.
