Horsford Motte and Bailey Castle

The mound rises quite suddenly from the flat Norfolk countryside east of Norwich - you'll spot it from the road well before you reach the site itself. Horsford Motte and Bailey is what remains of a Norman castle, built shortly after 1066 when William the Conqueror's lot were consolidating power across England. The motte, a steep earthen mound, dominates the landscape; the bailey, the defensive ditch and outer enclosure, is less obvious but still traceable if you know what you're looking for.

It's a walk-around job rather than a destination where you'll spend hours. The mound itself is accessible and climbable if you're reasonably fit, though the slope is genuinely steep and can get muddy. From the top you get solid views across open farmland - nothing spectacular, but it gives you a proper sense of how these early castles worked as lookout posts. The site is free and unmanned, so you arrive on your own terms. Twenty minutes is realistic if you're just having a quick look; give it an hour if you want to sit about and absorb the history.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile - there's something quite moving about standing on a 950-year-old mound that once held real military significance. Families with younger children might find it underwhelming unless they're into castles already. It works well as a pit stop during a wider Norfolk exploration, particularly if you're based at Top Farm Campsite nearby. Pair it with other Norman sites in the region if you've got the time.
