Horsehill Covert

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist destination, Horsehill Covert is a working forest just outside Gloucester where you can actually lose yourself among the trees without fighting crowds. The paths wind through mature woodland - mostly deciduous, so brilliant for autumn colour - and the whole place has that authentic English forest feel rather than anything manicured or theme-parked.

It's the sort of place where walkers and dog owners get the most mileage. You won't find facilities or attractions inside - just trees, trails, and the occasional bramble patch. There's no visitor centre or café, which is precisely why it works. Bring proper boots if the ground's been wet; drainage isn't great in parts. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing a proper loop, though you can do shorter spins depending on fitness.

Accessibility depends entirely on how recently the council has maintained the paths - they're there, but this isn't a corporate park with manicured surfaces. Free entry and no time restrictions, which is refreshing. It's genuinely useful if you're based at one of the local caravan sites like Pelerine or Millavon - close enough for a morning walk before heading into Gloucester, but far enough out to feel like actual countryside. In winter it can feel gloomy and claustrophobic; spring and summer are when it properly comes alive. Kids over eight will probably enjoy it; younger ones might find the lack of anything to actually do a bit tedious after thirty minutes.
