Hoplands Wood, LWT

Hoplands Wood is a Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve tucked inland from Skegness - about 3 miles from the seafront chaos. It's proper woodland, the kind you don't expect this far east where everything tends to flatten out into fenland. The trees here are a mix of native broadleaves and conifers, with paths threading through that feel genuinely wild for this part of the country.

You're here to walk and watch for wildlife rather than climb things or sit in cafes. Badgers use these woods, along with muntjac deer and various woodland birds - worth bringing binoculars if you're keen on spotting anything beyond the obvious robins and blackbirds. The ground can be muddy even days after rain, so proper boots matter. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're serious about birdwatching or photography.

Families with young kids will find it manageable but not thrilling - there's no play area and once you've walked the main circuit, there's not much reason to linger. Walkers heading back from beach holidays at Cottage Waters or Creekside will find it a decent leg-stretch before returning to the caravan. It's free to enter, managed by the local wildlife trust, though donations are always welcome.

Go early morning for wildlife spotting or late afternoon when the woods are quieter. Don't expect manicured trails or visitor facilities - this is conservation first, tourism second. That's exactly why it's worth the detour from Skegness if you need proper trees after days on the sand.
