Hooton Park Trust

A former RAF airfield turned into a working heritage site, Hooton Park sits just outside Chester and tells the story of British aviation from a distinctly unglamorous angle - which is precisely why it's worth your time. You're walking around actual wartime hangars and restored aircraft, many of which saw active service. The volunteers here know their stuff, and they'll happily spend an hour talking your ear off about Spitfires and the everyday mechanics of keeping a wartime base running.

It's the sort of place that proper aircraft enthusiasts will lose a whole afternoon to, though families with younger kids might find it a bit narrow in scope - there's not the interactive museum experience you'd get elsewhere. Older children interested in WWII or engineering will absolutely get something from it. Allow two to three hours if you're genuinely keen; an hour if you're just passing through.

The admission situation and opening hours can be sketchy, so ring ahead or check their social media before driving out. It's free or donation-based most weekends, but don't rely on that. Being just four miles from Chester Fairoaks Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Oakwood Farm Touring Park, you could easily slot it into a wider Cheshire break - pair it with a proper walk around Chester's walls or the Dee Valley if you want something with broader appeal. On its own, it's a specialist interest spot, not a draw for the casual day-tripper.
