Hood Hill

Hood Hill sits just north of York, a modest peak that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards those willing to make the short walk up. The views back towards the city are genuinely decent, stretching across the Vale of York on a clear day. It's not a challenging climb - more of a brisk ramble than a proper fell walk - which makes it exactly right for families who want to tick a summit without the drama.

The landscape up here feels properly open, with fields rolling away on either side. You get that pleasant sense of being above it all without needing to be a serious walker. Allow about an hour return trip from the car park, longer if you're with kids or fancy a proper potter about. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so come prepared with weather-appropriate kit.

Historically, there's not much fanfare attached to the place - it's more about the walk itself and the views than any particular story. That said, the Benedictine history lurking in these North Yorkshire hills is worth keeping in mind as you walk.
