Holyland Wood

You'll find yourself walking under a cathedral of oak and beech in Holyland Wood, just outside Pembroke. It's the kind of forest that makes you properly slow down - dappled light filtering through dense canopy, the ground soft with years of leaf fall. The woodland floor is quiet and layered, with streams trickling through in places and clearings where you can actually breathe.

This isn't a manicured country estate walk. It's genuine woodland, the sort locals have probably been tramping through for generations, and that's exactly why it works. You get genuine peace here without the tourist infrastructure that can make other beauty spots feel a bit crowded. The paths wind through without much in the way of signposting, so it rewards a bit of exploration.

Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will enjoy it. Pram users should probably look elsewhere. Dog walkers absolutely will make a beeline here - it's ideal territory for letting them properly run. History types might appreciate that this is proper old-growth woodland, the kind of landscape that's increasingly rare in Wales.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing anything more than a quick circuit. There's no visitor centre or facilities that we can find, so come prepared. It pairs well with a base at Quarry Wood Glamping or Florence Springs just down the road - close enough for a morning walk without eating into the day, but far enough that you feel genuinely away from the caravan park.
