Holy Trinity Church, Bickerton

The church sits on a rise above the village, visible for miles across the Cheshire plains. Holy Trinity at Bickerton is a proper country church - sandstone, sturdy, and honest rather than showy. Inside, the medieval bones are still there: stone arches, a decent font, and enough detail to keep history buffs occupied for twenty minutes or so.

It's the kind of place that rewards a detour if you're already walking the area. The churchyard itself is peaceful, with old graves tumbling down the slope, and there's a decent view back towards Chester from the gate. Don't expect elaborate monuments or rare treasures - this is a working village church that's been rebuilt and fiddled with across centuries, and that's part of its charm.

Walkers staying at Manor Wood or Bradley Hall Rural Escapes - both excellent rural bases - will find this worth an hour's ramble. Families with older kids who actually read plaques might get something from it; younger children will lose interest fast. The church is free to visit and sits right by Bickerton village, about four miles south-west of Chester. Check opening times before you go, as rural churches can be temperamental about their hours. There's no café attached, so bring a drink if you're making an afternoon of walking the surrounding lanes. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid stop on a longer exploration of the quieter side of Cheshire.
