Holy Trinity, Buildwas

The ruins of Holy Trinity stand quietly beside the River Severn, a few miles south of Coalbrookdale - easy to miss if you're whizzing past on the B4373. What you're looking at are the remains of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, founded in 1135, though most of what survives dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The stonework is substantial enough to give you a real sense of scale - the nave columns rise with proper gravitas, and you can trace the outline of the cloisters on the ground.

It's peaceful rather than dramatic. The abbey sits in a pastoral setting that feels genuinely remote despite being close to the industrial heritage sites nearby. You can walk around the perimeter for free and get a decent understanding of monastic life here - the chapter house, the remains of domestic buildings. There's an English Heritage information board explaining the layout, which helps. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're genuinely interested in abbey archaeology; half that if you're just passing through.

Walkers will appreciate it as a stop on longer routes along the Severn - the riverbank paths here are worth exploring. History types will find it meditative without being showy. Families with younger children might find it a bit sparse for holding attention for long.

If you're staying at Lower Hill Campsite or Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp - both within easy driving distance - it's well worth a morning visit alongside the Coalbrookdale museums and Iron Bridge. Go early to avoid crowds, though honestly crowds aren't much of a problem here.
