The water at Holmebrook Lake sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the Derbyshire sky like polished glass. It's a proper working reservoir that's somehow managed to become one of the quieter spots near Dronfield - not the sort of place you'll find queues of tourists, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a decent hour or so depending on pace. The path's well-maintained and there's genuine woodland backing parts of it - feels surprisingly remote given how close you are to actual civilisation. Birdwatchers rate it highly. Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it before the questions start, though there's not much in the way of facilities, so come prepared.
