Holme Wood

The walk into Holme Wood hits you straight away - ancient deciduous trees rising up on both sides, filtering the light into something soft and green. It's proper woodland, the kind where you actually feel like you've stepped somewhere different, not just a manicured forest with numbered trails. Near Kirkby Stephen, this is the sort of place that rewards a slower pace. You're looking at a mixed woodland with beech and oak, the floor thick with leaf litter and moss depending on the season. It's gentle walking territory, nothing too strenuous, and honestly that's the point. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, which means you're coming here to actually walk and look at trees, not to consume the experience. That filter keeps it quieter than it might be. For families with young walkers it works well - the paths are manageable and there's enough to hold attention without needing a gift shop to stay entertained. History types will appreciate it's been woodland for centuries, though it doesn't shout about it. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice. Spring's excellent when the bluebells come through, autumn when the light gets that golden thing going. If you're based at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just up the road, this is an easy add-on to a day out. Don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments. Come here if you want to walk properly in a wood.
