Holme marching camp

The earthworks at Holme are Roman, and they're subtle enough that you need to know what you're looking at. From the ground, what catches your eye are gentle banks and ditches cutting across open countryside near Newark - the sort of thing most people would walk past without thinking twice. But this is a marching camp, temporary quarters built by legions on the move during their conquest of Britain, probably in the first century AD.

It's archaeology without drama, really. No buildings, no artefacts on display - just the ground itself telling you where soldiers once pitched their tents in geometric order. Most people won't spend more than thirty minutes here, and that's fine.

Walkers will find it worthwhile as part of a wider ramble through the Nottinghamshire landscape, though it's not a destination in itself. History enthusiasts who've read about Roman occupation might get more from it than casual visitors, purely because you need that context to make sense of bumps in the earth. Children tend to lose interest fast unless you can make them visualize the tents and soldiers.

Combine it with Newark itself, which has proper museums covering the same Roman period, and you've got something more substantial.
