Holme Dunes

The moment you step onto the boardwalk at Holme Dunes, you're walking into one of Norfolk's most important coastal habitats. Run by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, this reserve sprawls across dunes, salt marsh, and shingle beach just east of Hunstanton - a proper wild bit of coastline that hasn't been prettified for visitors.

What you get here is genuine nature reserve experience. The boardwalks lead you through marram grass and over dunes where you might spot natterjack toads, little terns, or if you're lucky, seals hauled out on the beach. Binoculars are essential; this isn't a place for dramatic vistas but for patient wildlife watching. The trails are straightforward and flat, making it manageable for most fitness levels, though the wind can be relentless and the landscape feels properly exposed.

Families with kids old enough to enjoy spotting things will get something out of it. Toddlers might struggle with the lack of facilities or dramatic payoff. Serious birdwatchers and botanists will find themselves returning repeatedly - the seasonal changes are significant. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the main circuit; you can knock it out in 45 minutes if you're just after a quick walk.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a morning sortie before heading to one of the nearby holiday parks - Wild Luxury is barely a mile away, or the larger Parkdean Resorts and Searles Leisure Resort sit within easy reach. The reserve won't blow your mind, but it's genuine Norfolk coastline and worth the detour if you're staying in the area.
