Hollymount Forest

You'll find Hollymount Forest just outside Downpatrick, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be something it's not. It's the sort of place where you can spend an afternoon wandering between the trees without needing a plan or booking anything in advance. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, the paths are well-trodden, and on a quiet day you might not see another soul.

Walkers will get the most from it - this isn't a destination with views or attractions, it's about the simple pleasure of being among trees. The woodland is peaceful rather than dramatic, which suits some people perfectly.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Wear decent boots if the ground's been wet. It's the kind of place you'd fit into a broader walk around the area rather than travel specifically to see. If you're staying at Edgewater Holiday Park or Delamont Country Park nearby, it's an easy detour on a morning walk. The woodland gives you a taste of what the Mourne countryside offers without the uphill effort of the higher hills. Entry appears to be free, and you can spend as little as half an hour or stretch it to a couple of hours depending on how you feel. Go when the weather's dry - it can get properly muddy otherwise.
