Holford Kelting Nature Reserve

The walk into Holford Ketling Nature Reserve catches you off guard - you're suddenly swallowed by woodland so thick it feels like you've stepped into someone else's Somerset entirely. It's a proper nature reserve in the truest sense: no visitor centre, no signboards telling you what you're looking at, just you and the trees and whatever wildlife decides to show itself.

The reserve sits right on the Quantock Hills' eastern edge, which means the terrain's unexpectedly hilly for what looks like a gentle woodland walk on the map. There are streams running through it, patches of open grassland breaking up the trees, and on a quiet morning you might spot roe deer or hear woodpeckers. It's not dramatic in the way honeypot attractions are dramatic - it's quiet and a bit moody, which is exactly why walkers love it.

Bring decent shoes. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're the type to stop and properly listen. It's free and as far as anyone can tell there are no set opening hours - it's just open when you arrive. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds. But if you're staying at Moorhouse Campsite just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short trip. The whole area - Holford village and the surrounding walking country - makes for a proper restorative break, and you can combine this reserve with the broader Quantock Hills paths for a fuller day out.
