Holford Edge

The walk up Holford Edge is proper Somerset - steep in places, manageable if you're reasonably fit, and the views across the Quantocks make it well worth the effort. It's forest all the way, which means you're shaded from the sun (handy in summer) but also means the path can be muddy after rain, so wear decent boots.

You get woodland trails threading through beech and oak, with occasional glimpses towards the coast if the weather cooperates. History types might appreciate that the Quantock Hills have been walked for centuries - this isn't some manicured park, it's proper countryside where people have actually worked the land. Walkers absolutely love this route; families with younger kids might find the gradient a bit much for a leisurely afternoon, though keen rambling families won't bat an eyelid.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a full circuit, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath or fiddle with the map. There's no visitor facility at the top - no cafe, no loos, nothing - so come prepared. The access is free and open year-round, though autumn and spring are best when it's not too muddy and the light's better through the trees.

If you're staying at Moorhouse Campsite nearby, this is basically on your doorstep and makes a cracking morning walk before breakfast. It also sits well with a broader Quantocks itinerary if you're doing a few days in the area. Haven Doniford Bay is only four miles away, so perfectly doable as an outing from there too.
