Hogg's Lough

The water at Hogg's Lough sits dead calm most mornings, reflecting whatever sky's overhead. It's a modest body of water between Lisburn and Castlereagh, the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss entirely.

You can walk the perimeter - takes a solid hour without stopping - and there's decent bird watching if that's your thing. Herons, ducks, the occasional swan. The paths are straightforward, nothing technical, which means families with younger kids manage it fine. It's not dramatically scenic, but there's something quietly satisfying about a loop walk where you're not fighting crowds or scrambling over rocks.

If you're camped at Lakeside View Caravan Park nearby, this makes a natural morning outing before heading into Hillsborough proper for lunch or a nose around the village. Don't expect dramatic views or major installations - this is proper countryside walking, the kind where you actually notice birdsong and the light changing through the trees.

Free access as far as I could tell, and it works best outside school holidays when you've got the place more or less to yourself. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking your time. Worth combining with a visit to Hillsborough Fort or the village itself rather than making a dedicated trip, but if you're staying locally and want an easy leg-stretch with water views, it does the job.
