Hoe Hill

A gentle rise above the Lincolnshire countryside, Hoe Hill is an Iron Age hill fort that's quietly impressive without demanding much from you. The earthworks are still legible - you can walk the perimeter and make out the defensive ditches and banks that would have protected whoever lived here around 2,000 years ago. It's not dramatic in the way some Cotswold hill forts are, but that's rather the point. You get the landscape to yourself most days.

Market Rasen sits just a few miles south, so this works well as a morning wander before heading into town for lunch. The site itself is free to visit and takes about an hour to properly explore, though you could be in and out in thirty minutes if you're pressed. There's no interpretation board or visitor centre - you're reading the land itself, which appeals to people who like their archaeology unmediated. Families with older kids who can manage muddy fields will find it worthwhile. Younger children might find it a bit abstract.

What makes Hoe Hill genuinely useful is its proximity to the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape, just four miles away. You could combine this with a longer walk through the Wolds, or use it as a half-day activity alongside glamping at Into the Wild if you're after something a bit different from the usual park holiday. The surrounding terrain is proper walking country - rolling and open without being exhausting. Go after rainfall when the earthworks show up best.
