HMS Beagle (remains of)

The rotting timbers you'll find in Burnham-on-Crouch aren't much to look at, but they're what remains of the HMS Beagle - the ship that carried Charles Darwin around the world from 1831 to 1836. That's the entire point of coming here, really. The vessel was deliberately scuttled in the River Blackwater in the 1870s and now lies partially submerged, a shadow of the five-masted brig that rewrote our understanding of evolution.

Historically minded visitors and Darwin enthusiasts will find it worth the trip, though you need to manage expectations. This isn't a museum or reconstructed vessel - it's archaeology in progress, and you're essentially looking at decomposing wood from the water's edge. The best views come at low tide when more of the hull becomes visible. Burnham-on-Crouch itself is a pleasant enough riverside town with pubs and chip shops, so you can make an afternoon of it.

Free to visit, though there's no dedicated visitor facility. Allow 45 minutes if you're genuinely interested; less if you're just ticking boxes. It works well as part of a broader Essex coast exploration - Riverside Village Holiday Park and Sea End Country Park sit just up the road, both decent bases for walking the tidal marshes and exploring the coastline. The archaeology here matters more than the spectacle, but that's precisely why some people will find it compelling.
