Hinchingbrooke Country Park

The grounds of Hinchingbrooke Country Park sprawl across what was once a grand estate just outside Huntingdon, and walking around them feels like you've stumbled into someone's rather impressive backyard. The main draw is the house itself - a rambling Tudor and Georgian affair with actual history attached to it - but honestly, the park's the thing. There are proper woodland trails, open meadows where you can lose an hour without trying, and the sort of riverside paths that make you understand why people move to Cambridgeshire in the first place.

It's excellent for families who can handle a decent walk without complaining, and walkers will appreciate the network of routes threading through the grounds. Historians will want to poke around the house and its grounds - there's real stuff here, not theme-park nonsense. The setting feels genuinely peaceful rather than artificially curated, which is rare enough to mention.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Huntingdon Boathaven is practically on the doorstep - you've got an easy morning or afternoon sorted without needing to drive anywhere. Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club is further out but still within reach if you want to combine a bit of walking with some time on the water. Admission appears to be free, which sweetens the deal considerably. Allow two to three hours if you want to see the grounds properly rather than just doing a quick loop. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends bring the school groups and it loses some of its charm.
