Hilton Wood

The woodland around Hilton Wood, just outside Northallerton, is properly peaceful - the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's not a manicured country estate walk; this is proper forest with decent paths that wind through mixed woodland and open out onto quieter stretches where you can actually breathe.

You're looking at a solid hour or two here depending on how you feel about wandering. The paths are manageable for families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground, though it's not pushchair-friendly. Dog walkers absolutely love it - there's room to let them off lead and proper space to properly tire them out.

What makes it worthwhile is the genuine sense of escape. North Yorkshire has no shortage of woodland, but Hilton Wood feels less trafficked than some of the more obvious spots closer to the market towns. The forest floor's thick with moss and leaf litter, and you'll spot plenty of native trees if you're into that sort of thing.

Free to visit, naturally. Go early in the day if you want solitude, especially on weekends. If you're staying at Whorlton Pods - just down the road at five miles - this makes an obvious morning ramble before heading into Northallerton proper for lunch. It's the kind of walk you won't remember for dramatic views, but you'll remember feeling genuinely away from things.
