You can take a stadium tour when matches aren't on, which covers the dressing rooms, dugouts, and museum space. It's well done - the guides know their stuff and aren't shy about the difficult bits of the club's story. The 1989 disaster is handled with appropriate gravity. Non-match-day visits run around 90 minutes and cost a tenner or so, though I'd check ahead as details shift seasonally.

Not everyone will find it riveting - if football leaves you cold, it's an industrial landscape that loses its appeal quickly. But for kids who support Wednesday, or grown-ups who do, or anyone interested in how British football grounds evolved, it's worth the trip into Sheffield.

The surrounding area isn't exactly scenic, but you're only 3-4 miles from proper countryside. Fox Hagg Farm Campsite and East Peak are close enough for a quick visit between other activities, and Wyming Brook Farm is just beyond, all solid bases if you're camping in the region. Combine it with Sheffield's city centre attractions rather than treating it as an isolated day out.
