Hillgate Spring

A woodland spring tucked away east of Hitchin, Hillgate Spring is one of those places that rewards a bit of poking about. The water emerges from chalky ground in a proper forest setting, and there's something quietly satisfying about finding the actual source rather than just walking past it on a wider footpath.

It's best suited to walkers who enjoy a bit of navigation and people interested in how the landscape actually works. You won't spend hours here - fifteen minutes to half an hour if you're taking photos and sitting about - but it makes a worthwhile stop on a longer woodland circuit through Hertfordshire's chalk country.

The surrounding forest is pleasant enough for a proper walk. Bring decent boots if there's been rain, as the ground gets boggy near the spring itself. No facilities on site and it's free, naturally, since there's nothing to charge for.
