Hillbarn Clump

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Hillbarn Clump sits just outside Wantage and delivers exactly what you'd hope from a Berkshire forest - decent tree cover, quiet paths, and the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's small enough that you won't get lost for hours, but large enough that it feels like a proper escape from the surrounding farmland.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous, with paths threading through at a gentle gradient. Nothing dramatic happens here - no viewpoints, no historical markers - which is rather the point. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward network of routes, though serious hikers might find it a bit tame. Families with younger children can manage a 45-minute loop without complaints, and it's the sort of place where letting them run ahead actually works without risk of them vanishing into the distance.

Worth timing your visit for autumn, when the leaf colour is proper striking. Spring's decent too if you want bluebells and birdsong. Midweek mornings are quieter than weekends, though it's rarely rammed regardless.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Evelyns Garden is barely half a mile away, or Lorne Hill Farm if you want something with more space - this makes a solid morning walk before heading into Wantage for lunch.
