Hill of Mackalea

The walk up Mackalea is exactly the sort of grind that makes you question your life choices halfway through, then feel utterly vindicated by the view. It's a proper hill rather than a gentle stroll - steep in patches, boggy in others, and the kind of climb that leaves your legs reminding you about it the next morning.

From the summit, you get the sort of panoramic sweep across Aberdeenshire and into the Highlands that justifies the effort. On a clear day - and you'll need patience to catch one - the views reach well beyond Keith and into genuinely wild country. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here. Families with young kids might find it a bit much, though determined teenagers with decent boots will manage it fine.

The hill works brilliantly if you're staying at Hillside Havens, just a few miles away near Keith. It's the sort of half-day outing that fits perfectly between breakfast and an evening meal at the park. Allow two to three hours depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath. There's no visitor infrastructure up here - bring water, wear proper boots, and check the weather forecast before you head out. The Scottish weather can turn in minutes, and there's nowhere to shelter once you're committed to the climb.

Worth doing? Yes. Revolutionary? No. But it's honest hillwalking without the crowds you'd find on bigger peaks.
