Hill of Luquharn

The walk up Hill of Luquharn, near Mintlaw, takes about an hour and rewards you with proper views across Aberdeenshire's farmland. It's not dramatic - no rocky scrambles or Alpine vistas - but on a clear day you can see right across the Buchan plateau, which feels genuinely expansive when you're standing at the top.

The ascent itself is straightforward, more a country ramble than a serious hill walk. The landscape is rolling rather than rugged, with grazing fields and hedgerows surrounding the route. Families with kids aged eight and up won't struggle, though it's muddy after rain and there's no café or facilities at the summit, so bring water and a packed lunch if you're planning to linger.

What makes it worth doing is the context. If you're staying at Aden Caravan & Camping or Peterhead Marina Bay Holiday Park - both excellent bases about 4 to 6 miles away - this gives you an afternoon activity that doesn't require booking or planning. It's free and it's local. You'll rarely see crowds.

The surrounding area is gently undulating Buchan countryside, dotted with small farms and stone walls. History walkers might note the area's agricultural heritage, though there's nothing ancient or dramatically positioned on the hill itself. The real appeal is simply being outside on something that feels like proper Aberdeenshire.
