Hill of Loyal

The walk up Hill of Loyal from Blairgowrie is steep enough to earn respect but short enough that you won't hate yourself for attempting it. The summit sits at around 1,000 feet, and on a clear day the views across Perthshire stretch far enough to make the huffing and puffing worthwhile. You get proper Highland scenery without needing to drive three hours north - that's the appeal here.

The climb takes about 45 minutes if you're reasonably fit, longer if you're taking it steady or stopping for photographs. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy underfoot, so decent boots are essential rather than optional. The reward at the top is a genuine sense of achievement and panoramic views that fold out in all directions. Walkers and hill-baggers get the most from this one; it's not a destination for the casual stroller, but it's equally not a full day's expedition.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the view, and weekday visits mean fewer folk at the summit. Winter can be dramatic but slippery - spring and autumn are more forgiving. Free to access, no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat.

If you're based at Five Roads or Nethercraig Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring Blairgowrie itself afterwards - the town has decent cafes and a reasonable high street. The proximity to caravan parks makes it a natural fit for a longer stay in the area.
