Hill of Bucharn

The Hill of Bucharn sits above Huntly like a modest sentinel, nothing glamorous but genuinely worth the climb if you're staying in the area. It's a proper hill walk rather than a strenuous fell slog - the sort of thing you can do mid-morning and still have time for lunch in town.

From the top, you get sweeping views across Aberdeenshire's rolling landscape. On a clear day the sight lines stretch for miles, and there's something satisfying about standing there knowing most tourists have completely missed it. The walk itself takes about forty minutes up, depending on fitness, and the paths are well-defined if occasionally muddy.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger children might find it a bit of a drag without a real summit café to reward them at the top - it's just grass and views, no Tesco chocolate bars. That said, if your crew enjoys being outdoors and doesn't need constant entertainment, they'll likely enjoy spotting Huntly Castle in the distance.

There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of. Go early morning for the best light and fewest midges. Huntly Castle Holiday Park is barely a couple of miles away, making this an easy addition to a park-based holiday without eating up a whole day. The walk pairs well with exploring Huntly itself afterwards - grab something at a local café and call it a solid half-day's outing.
